Preview: Theo

Normally in the Winter months I try to make sure all my newborn shoots are done in the morning when the light is best. I find that some babies are fine with me using flash, but others don’t like it, as they are so sensitive to light – so it’s best not to rely on it.

Theo’s shoot was one of the few I’ve done this season in the afternoon which can cause problems with the light temperature being very cold, but I’ve still got some really nice shots of him. More coming soon, as always!

Love heart sweets and sticky lollies

I’m sure I don’t need to remind anyone that yesterday was Valentine’s Day. Hubby and I didn’t really celebrate, as we’re off for a Spa weekend on Friday instead, but I did get into the spirit by taking a few love themed photos.

Mostly inspired by all things sweet…

If you’re already a facebook fan, then you’ll have seen the photo I posted yesterday as a greeting. Today I thought I’d show you a few more from the ‘shoot’. In a departure from my usual style, some of these images have been fairly heavily photoshopped – for which I make no apologies.

There’s lots more coming up in the next few weeks, I’m falling quite behind on my blogging so if you’re waiting for your sneak peek to appear don’t worry – it’s coming, I promise!

The Chosen Ones

It’s been a long time coming, but order finally completed I can now blog the photos that Ben and Becky chose of the lovely Amelie. They took their four favourites, including some of my absolute favourites, and here they are:

As always, there are some that I love from a photographer’s perspective, that parents just don’t adore the way I expect. I guess because it’s just not the way they see their little girl.

Here’s an example:

I love the way she’s looking straight at me, and the contrast between her dark eyes and beautiful pale skin.

Sneak Preview: Amelie

On Friday I went over to do a shoot with the lovely Amelie and her mum. She charmed the socks off me, and we had a very enjoyable afternoon playing in the autumn sun (it was an unseasonably nice day!)

We used hay from the nearby farm for this shot and collected apples from their orchard to create a really autumnal look. I think it’s worked great, and I know mum is really looking forward to seeing the photos so I hope she enjoys this sneak preview.

Scary it isn’t. But doesn’t she look a treat? (sorry i couldn’t resist!)

More photos will follow once I’ve finished the editing!

Lifestyle Portraits

I photographed Lauren at her 18th birthday party last week. It’s taken me a little while to get around to blogging the photos though as I’ve been ill. Since I’m now sitting at home in self-induced quarantine, it seemed like a good time to write the post.

I only had a short amount of time to get the shots, as obviously she’d rather be partying with her friends than posing for me – but I was pleased with the results, and think she will be too. The style is inspired by the popular Seniors portraits done in America, and the idea is to celebrate a landmark stage in youngsters lives. It’s a coming of age portrait, I suppose.

Anyway, here are a few favourite images from the shoot:

Lauren had a fairly prominent tan line on her shoulder, but the colours in the image above have hidden it quite well.

If you’d like a portrait session to capture a special moment, whether it be a teen growing up, a family portrait, a new baby, or a baby on it’s way; whatever you’d like Flaming Silk Photography can help provide memories to cherish for years to come. Session fees start from just £25, and you can choose between images on disc and professional quality prints, among many other options.

Location shoot – Cornfields

I went out to take some test shots for a potential location recently. The idea is to use off-camera flash for some stylish location portraits. I think the location looks great, and there’s lots of different ways to photograph people here, hopefully I’ll get a chance to try it out for real before they cut all the corn! I’m hoping to test another location later this week as I’ve seen a place I think would work well, so keep watching the blog for more…

If you’d like some fun and contemporary portraits on location, please give me a call to book a shoot. Whether it’s for your self or for family and friends (photography makes a great gift!) I can create images you’ll want to look at for years, and surprisingly affordable too.

Polaroid Emulsion Lift

I’ve been testing out a slightly different technique lately, using an old polaroid camera to capture Black & White images during a shoot.

Then, back home I separate the image from the polaroid frame using water and carefully apply it to another surface, usually a prepared piece of paper. You can create an image on pretty much anything using this method, so the possibilities are virtually endless!

Here’s an example of a location shot from a recent wedding. I’d love to know what you all think of this type of shot so please do leave your comments and feedback!

I didn’t get to shoot the Royal Wedding…

…..but I did get to shoot at Mr & Mrs Breeze’s wedding the very same day.

It started off pretty gloomy, but the sun came out in time for the ceremony and reception, thankfully. Birtsmorton Court, near Malvern was an absolutely stunning location and a privilege to shoot. All the best for the future to the lovely pair, and I hope you’ll be thrilled with this sneak preview shot (and all the others too!)

In the next few weeks I’m working on an exciting new service to offer customers, so look out for details! If you want to be the first to know it’ll be announced on the Facebook page first, so make sure to ‘like’ Flaming Silk Photography.

Baby, baby, baby

Earlier this month I was asked to shoot some photos at a Dedication ceremony for a little boy.

I’ve just started to process them as I’ve been really busy with assignments lately, Sorry to Marcus and Helen for the delay! Hopefully it won’t take more than a day or two to get them all finished though. Will post a few more pics when I’ve processed them.

The blog has gotten off to kind of a slow start, partly due to my being a neglectful blog-parent, partly due to having had swine flu for the past week. :-s

Is blog-parent a legitimate term? I don’t know but I know I like it!

I’ve been making business cards this evening. I’ve had some difficulty as I think the pictures I use should be wedding related but I’ve got some other miscellaneous pictures that I really love and want to include. In the end I think it’s going to come down to how well they crop onto the cards.

But that’s not the point of tonight. I wanted to talk about wedding plans. While I’ve been ill I’ve started looking for a Photographer for my own wedding and to be honest, I think I underestimated how difficult it would be!

I know I’m a special case, being a Photographer myself my demands are high. Frankly if I thought anyone would let me get away with it I’d try to photograph my own wedding! But it’d never work, so I’m looking for someone else I trust enough to do it.

I figured I’d get someone I know, but I can’t think of anyone, which is ridiculous. So; reluctantly I started looking at Photographers in the area where we’re getting married.

I must’ve looked at dozens of websites for Photographers now and found only a handful whose work I liked, and a lot of them don’t quote prices or even give an indication of what price bracket they fall in. I don’t know about anyone else but I find this really annoying, what’s the point in having a flash-looking website if it doesn’t convey any useful information? It certainly doesn’t make me feel inclined to enquire.

And what have I found? Who have I booked? No-one as yet. The only guy so far I was impressed enough to enquire about is already booked. So I guess what I’ve learned is this: Book your Photographer in advance!

I’m hoping I never have to book another Wedding Photographer though!
